So here we are, several months after I started Over Ice Apparel and a couple months after I had hoped to launch. We have been working diligently, three rounds of prototypes received, reviewed, washed and edited, care labels, size labels, main label on hand, fabric and notions in place. Photoshoot being planned. Lots of hours have been put into this line to ensure a great fit. We are so close I can taste it, yet still not quite ready for production. I should be more frustrated and impatient and while I wait for the next samples I realize that skating has taught me so many lessons that helped me in my business.
Challenge, Patience, Persistence and Courage
Figure skating is challenging, requires patience, persistence and courage, but the reward is pure joy. Some skills come fast and some many months. There are great skating days and frustrating skating days where you feel like hanging up your skates. But when you finally get the skill it is so rewarding, even if you only get it once and then not again for a couple or even a few more weeks. You know that if you keep at it, it too will come. Like every pro-type, each one is so much better than the last one and some are good to go now.
Be Coachable (learn to take and give feedback), Innovation and YOU CAN't DO IT ALONE.
Finally, the families of skaters, that support them both financially and with the time commitment. Like skating I would not be running the business with out my designers, suppliers, factories and family.
Joy, Love What You Do and It’s Never Too Late
I started figure skating in my mid 40’s. Yes, not the usual time someone would learn to figure skate. You are more cautious, and it takes longer to learn, but you do learn and when you do it’s truly amazing. Skating gifted me with joy, joy that is so immense that it enriches your entire life. When you have that kind of joy you are more positive and grateful, which impacts all areas of your life. I figured if I’m not too old to learn to figure skate, it’s not too late for me to start a new business. Creating the flirty skirts and warm, soft sweaters is bringing the same joy figure skating does.
Even though things are taking longer than I hoped and at times challenging, I keep going. Just like the coaches that never gave up on me and believed in me, so I work hard to prove them right. I want to see what Over Ice Apparel is capable of and I don’t want to lose out on the joy it has brought me and hopefully soon, you too.
We are working our butts off to have products ready to showcase to you all soon. Stay tune and follow our social media for updates!
With love and warm regards,
